Callerton Academy Permanent Site Newsletter: December 2024
Welcome to our winter information update on the building programme for our new school.
Since our July newsletter, a lot has happened on-site, and we are pleased to report that everything is progressing very well.
From the outside, you can see that much of the brickwork is now complete, along with the installation of windows and cladding — the building is starting to look impressive. Less visible but equally important, the photovoltaic panels, which will play a key role in ensuring our new school operates in a carbon-neutral manner, are being installed on the main roof.
The sports pitches at the rear of the building have been seeded, and the grass is growing well. Work has also begun on the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).
The most exciting developments are taking place inside the building. Most of the rooms have now been formed, which means that during site visits, we can walk through doorways off the corridors into classrooms and office spaces. In some cases, the decoration of these areas has already begun. Meanwhile, the installation of pipework, as well as small power and lighting cables in both rooms and corridors, is well underway.
The next stages will involve starting the joinery work, which includes adding doors, skirting boards, and architraves. Morgan Sindall will continue to progress the decoration and begin work on the flooring.
This term, Callerton students participated in Gingerbread Street, a project at The Biscuit Factory run by Oasis Community Housing. The idea to participate came from one of our architects at Space Architects, Joanna Wylie, and the project was supported by Morgan Sindall. Joanna, along with a small team of colleagues, worked with two Year 10 food technology groups to produce a gingerbread model of the entrance to our new school. The team also spent time discussing careers in architecture with our students. We are delighted to announce that our entry won a Community Champion Award. The model will be on display at The Biscuit Factory in Ouseburn until December 27th.
Below you can view some recent photos of the new building and site.
We hope you enjoy the holidays and look forward to sharing more exciting progress next term.
