Science at Callerton Academy: Last week, members of our Year 7 Space Club enjoyed an unforgettable visit to Kielder Observatory! Students spent the day learning all about astronomy, exploring the observatory's impressive telescopes and discovering how scientists observe the night sky. They also took part in interactive sessions, asked some brilliant questions and were even lucky enough to observe the Moon through one of the observatory's powerful telescopes. The stunning views across Kielder Forest made for the perfect backdrop to a day full of curiosity, discovery and inspiration. A fantastic experience for our budding astronomers, and one we're sure they won't forget! Please see the latest update from the Department for Education regarding preparing for further hot weather. Dear Parents/Carers, As temperatures increase over the next couple of days, as part of our usual hot weather arrangements, students do not need to wear their school jumper while temperatures remain high. Please also ensure your child brings a refillable water bottle to school each day so they can stay hydrated throughout the day and wear suncream for when outside. From September, our uniform policy will allow students to wear black tailored shorts throughout the year. However, to help our young people stay comfortable during the current warm weather, we will also permit black tailored shorts to be worn for the remainder of this week. Food Technology at Callerton Academy: Our Year 6 Transition Day was packed with exciting opportunities to experience life at Callerton Academy, with students taking part in lessons across a wide range of subjects. In Food Technology, our future Year 7s put their creativity to the test by decorating their own cookies. From colourful icing and marshmallows to chocolate curls, sprinkles and stars, the results were fantastic! It was wonderful to see so much imagination, enthusiasm and care going into every design. Year 9 at Callerton Academy: London awaits! Our Year 9 students are counting down to three unforgettable days in the capital, where they'll explore some of the UK's most iconic landmarks, experience world-class theatre with Wicked, take to the River Thames on a sightseeing cruise, brave the London Dungeons, discover the Imperial War Museum and enjoy free time at both Leicester Square and Borough Market. Last week, students and families joined us for our information event, where we shared everything they need to know before setting off – from the itinerary and packing list to accommodation, expectations and trip arrangements. Attendance at Callerton Academy: THE FIRST 100! England kick off their World Cup campaign against Mexico early on Monday morning, and we've got a great reason to make it into school on time! The first 100 students through the school gates on Monday morning will receive a voucher for a FREE breakfast sandwich to enjoy at break time. It's another exciting part of our World Cup Attendance Challenge, rewarding students for great attendance and punctuality. Performing Arts at Callerton Academy: Our school orchestra recently enjoyed an unforgettable visit to The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, where they performed as part of a fantastic mass orchestra in collaboration with Orchestras for All. Bringing together schools from across the North East, the event celebrated the joy of making music together. Our talented musicians performed an exciting programme including 'This Is Berk' from How to Train Your Dragon and 'We Are the Champions' by Queen. We were incredibly proud to receive wonderful feedback from both the Orchestras for All team and other participating schools, who praised our students for being enthusiastic, polite and fully engaged throughout the day. They represented Callerton Academy brilliantly and were outstanding ambassadors for our school. If you'd like to hear our orchestra perform, you'll have the chance at our Summer Festival on Wednesday 8th July. We'd love to see our families and the wider Callerton community there to celebrate the hard work and talent of our young musicians. Art at Callerton Academy: Our Year 7 Experimental Art Club has been exploring a range of exciting mixed media techniques to create these vibrant fruit studies – and the results are simply fantastic! Students experimented with: Watercolour and salt effects Coffee staining Fineliner illustration Oil pastels Chalk pen highlights Acrylic paint splatters By combining different materials and techniques, students produced expressive, layered artwork full of colour, texture and personality. Every piece is unique, showcasing both creativity and a willingness to experiment.
