MFL at Callerton Academy: Last week, a group of our Year 10 Spanish students visited Newcastle University for an exciting Modern Foreign Languages Taster Day, giving them the opportunity to experience what studying languages at university is like. Throughout the day, students explored the many opportunities that learning languages can unlock, from higher education to future careers. They took part in university-style Spanish and Chinese lessons, discussing the growing role of artificial intelligence in translation and analysing short films in Cantonese and Mandarin. They also enjoyed exploring the university campus and its fantastic facilities. We were especially proud to receive outstanding feedback from the organisers, who praised our students for being confident, resilient and fully engaged throughout the visit. They represented Callerton Academy brilliantly and were a real credit to themselves and our school. Year 10 at Callerton Academy: Yesterday marked the final day in school for our Year 10 students before they head off on their work experience placements during Yellow Week. We hope everyone has a fantastic week, gains valuable experience and enjoys the opportunity to explore the world of work. To celebrate the end of the year, students came together for a Year 10 Celebration Assembly, where we recognised some of the many achievements across the cohort. Awards were presented for Form Tutor Awards, Most Improved Student, 100% Attendance, Most Improved Attendance, and our dedicated Sports Ambassadors. Congratulations to everyone who received an award – a fantastic way to round off the year! We also managed to capture one of our Year 10 tutor groups at the end of the day before everyone headed off for work experience. After four years together since joining Callerton Academy in Year 7, it's a lovely reminder of just how much our students have grown during their time with us. The next time we see our Year 10 students, they'll be returning as Year 11 for their final year of secondary school. We can't wait to welcome them back in September, ready for the final push towards their GCSEs and all the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. Reading at Callerton Academy: Our KS3 Star Readers enjoyed a fantastic reward trip to Waterstones Newcastle to celebrate their enthusiasm for reading and commitment to our reading programme! Students spent the morning browsing the shelves, discovering new authors and genres, and choosing a brand-new book to take home. They also enjoyed a well-earned stop in the café, where they relaxed with drinks and cake while chatting about their latest reads. Reward trips like these are a wonderful way to celebrate students who consistently demonstrate a love of reading and inspire others to pick up a book. Reading at Callerton Academy: Creativity and a love of reading have come together brilliantly in our library, where students have been designing and creating their own handmade miniature books! From original stories and poetry anthologies to travel guides, fact books and beautifully illustrated creations, each book showcases the imagination, craftsmanship and individuality of its creator. Students carefully planned, wrote, illustrated and assembled their books by hand, producing some truly impressive finished pieces. The collection is now proudly on display in the library for everyone to enjoy. Food Technology at Callerton Academy: Our talented Year 9V students have been putting their baking and decorating skills to the test by creating these fantastic mini Victoria sponge cakes! Students carefully baked and assembled their cakes before filling them with jam, piping buttercream icing, and adding their own creative finishing touches with a variety of sprinkles and decorations. The quality of the finished products was absolutely fantastic, with students demonstrating excellent practical skills, creativity and attention to detail throughout the lesson. Science at Callerton Academy: Last week, members of our Year 7 Space Club enjoyed an unforgettable visit to Kielder Observatory! Students spent the day learning all about astronomy, exploring the observatory's impressive telescopes and discovering how scientists observe the night sky. They also took part in interactive sessions, asked some brilliant questions and were even lucky enough to observe the Moon through one of the observatory's powerful telescopes. The stunning views across Kielder Forest made for the perfect backdrop to a day full of curiosity, discovery and inspiration. A fantastic experience for our budding astronomers, and one we're sure they won't forget! Please see the latest update from the Department for Education regarding preparing for further hot weather. Dear Parents/Carers, As temperatures increase over the next couple of days, as part of our usual hot weather arrangements, students do not need to wear their school jumper while temperatures remain high. Please also ensure your child brings a refillable water bottle to school each day so they can stay hydrated throughout the day and wear suncream for when outside. From September, our uniform policy will allow students to wear black tailored shorts throughout the year. However, to help our young people stay comfortable during the current warm weather, we will also permit black tailored shorts to be worn for the remainder of this week. Food Technology at Callerton Academy: Our Year 6 Transition Day was packed with exciting opportunities to experience life at Callerton Academy, with students taking part in lessons across a wide range of subjects. In Food Technology, our future Year 7s put their creativity to the test by decorating their own cookies. Year 9 at Callerton Academy: London awaits! Our Year 9 students are counting down to three unforgettable days in the capital, where they'll explore some of the UK's most iconic landmarks, experience world-class theatre with Wicked, take to the River Thames on a sightseeing cruise, brave the London Dungeons, discover the Imperial War Museum and enjoy free time at both Leicester Square and Borough Market. Last week, students and families joined us for our information event, where we shared everything they need to know before setting off – from the itinerary and packing list to accommodation, expectations and trip arrangements.
