Science at Callerton Academy: Our Year 9 students have been investigating the organisation of plants and animals, exploring how specialised cells work together to form tissues, organs, and organ systems. In this practical lesson, students examined the underside of purple inch plant leaves under the microscope to observe stomata and their guard cells. These specialised cells control the opening and closing of the stomata, allowing plants to regulate gas exchange letting carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis while releasing oxygen and water vapour . Using microscopes, students were able to clearly identify the stomata and see how the guard cells surround the tiny pore that controls the movement of gases in and out of the leaf. Hospitality and Catering at Callerton Academy: Our Year 11 Hospitality & Catering students have been practising their presentation and plating skills as they prepare for their NEA practical exam next half term. Students created beautifully presented fish cakes, carefully thinking about portioning, garnishes, and how to plate their dishes in a way that would look at home in a professional restaurant kitchen. From fresh salads and lemon wedges to neatly presented sauces, the attention to detail really stood out. The finished dishes looked fantastic and demonstrated the creativity, care and technical skill our students have been developing throughout the course. From the SEND Department at Callerton Academy: Families may be interested in these upcoming sessions focused on worry and anxiety, particularly around school attendance, exams, and school-related stress. These sessions were developed following discussions within the Outer West CYP Leads Network and findings from the HRBQ, where exam and school-related worry were identified as the top concern for many young people. Parent/Carer Workshop – Emotional-Based School Avoidance Delivered by Space to Grow 10th March 1:30–2:30pm Galafield Family Hub This session will support parents and carers to better understand emotional-based school avoidance and explore strategies to help young people who may be struggling with anxiety around attending school. Parent Workshop 3-Session Group for Young People (Ages 8–13) Delivered by Space to Grow 3rd, 10th & 17th March 3:30–4:30pm Galafield Family Hub These sessions will explore: Managing school stress Self-esteem Emotional regulation Emotional literacy Building positive relationships The sessions provide free emotional wellbeing support to help children feel happier, supported, and healthier. From the SEND Department at Callerton Academy: Families may find this upcoming drop-in support event helpful if they are exploring whether their child may be neurodivergent. At these events, parents and carers can speak with professionals about the support available for children and young people, including information about autism and ADHD assessments, mental health support, parent support services, and activities and groups for young people. One remaining drop-in session: 20th March, 9:30am–12:30pm – The Haven, Kenton (NE3 3RX) In addition, Wildside CIC have announced a range of new outdoor wellbeing projects for children and families. These free projects are funded by the National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund and have been co-designed with people who have lived experience. Maths at Callerton Academy: Recently, our Peer Coaching group visited Northumbria University to celebrate their graduation from the programme During the visit, students had the opportunity to tour the university campus, explore what studying at university might be like, and take part in activities where they designed their own university. They also spent time reflecting on their experiences of coaching and being coached by other students as part of the programme. Our students represented Callerton Academy brilliantly alongside another participating school, showing fantastic progress in both their Mathematics skills and confidence. It was a great way to celebrate the hard work and collaboration that has taken place throughout the programme. Maths at Callerton Academy: To celebrate World Maths Day (25th March), the Maths Department is running two exciting competitions for our KS3 students and pupils from our feeder primary schools. Students can choose to take part in one of two creative challenges: Design a Maths Board Game based on a topic of their choice Design a Maths T-Shirt using mathematical symbols, patterns or calculations These competitions are a great way for students to combine creativity with mathematical thinking, while celebrating the importance of maths across our school community. Entries will be shortlisted by teachers, with winners announced and prizes awarded before the Easter break. Science at Callerton Academy: 9B have been carrying out a sheep heart dissection as part of their work on the circulatory system Students identified the four chambers, located the major blood vessels and examined the valves to understand how they prevent backflow of blood. Seeing the heart up close also allowed them to appreciate just how thick and powerful the cardiac muscle is especially in the ventricles, which must contract forcefully to pump blood around the entire body. Holding the heart really brought home the idea that this small organ is built for strength and endurance, working continuously throughout an animal's life. 9B approached the practical with maturity and focus, demonstrating excellent practical skills and thoughtful discussion throughout. #CallertonAcademy #CreatingFutures #GosforthGroup #ScienceAtCA #Biology #Year9 #PracticalScience #CirculatorySystem #HandsOnLearning #STEMEducation
