Making our Mark on our New School Building!

A group of student representatives had an exciting visit to Harry Marsh Engineers Limited. The company are fabricating the steel components for the building framework of our new school build. During the visit, students were given the opportunity to sign an exposed steel with chalk. The student’s signatures have been welded to become a permanent part of the steel frames which form part of the sports hall. This creates a visible link between the school’s students and its infrastructure. The components of the steel frames are being delivered so that the steel frame can be erected over the next few weeks. To be selected for the visit to Harry Marsh Engineers Limited, students had to write a short message explaining why they should be chosen for the experience and what they loved most about Callerton Academy. From the process, nine students were chosen.

Here's some quotes from students who attended the steel beams trip:

Willow "I'm interested in becoming a welder or entering the engineering industry so today was very helpful because we learnt about apprenticeships.*

Adiya "It was an interesting and unusual experience to be in a factory and to see the fabrication of steel beams - I've never been in a factory before!"

Phuong "I loved writing my name on the steel beam, I can't believe how long it is - we for all our names in and there was still lots of room"

Breakthrough "My favourite part of today was seeing the programme used to plan the building - it's amazing to see where building a school begins."

Nuha "I really enjoyed seeing the drawings of the building, it's exciting to know what the school building is going to look like!"

Harry A "This was a great trip for me because I'm interested in a career in welding and it was useful to compare this factory to Komatsu which we visited on a different school trip. It helped me to start thinking about the type of place I want to work."

Harry G "One of my favourite parts of the day was seeing the finished product of the steal beams. When we walked in we saw the rusty beams, then we saw the beams being cleaned and finally painted. I was impressed with how different they looked from the beginning"

Yousif "I enjoyed seeing the technical design of the building on the com uter as this is a career I'd like to explore"

Emily "I enjoyed the talk about how the school would be built, especially when we got to see and lift the bolts - they're so heavy!"
